I'm considering building a NAS instead of purchasing a Synology or QNAP pre-built so that I can get more bang for my buck, as well as some future-proofing. I’m attempting to piece together a NAS on somewhat of budget that will hopefully perform the following decently well: 1) Plex media server - handle transcoding of 4k streams for a few simultaneous clients (quick sync requirement) 2) *arr suite - plan on having these run in a container. Mergerfs is directly supported in OMV5, and was easy to configure. ![]() My setup to compare the power consumption with others: I3 10105t Itx motherboard (asrock b560m itx, but the ideal one would be the h570m itx if you can purchase one) 32gb ram 512nvme 2x12tb hdd. Need to build a system with the following features: Low power CPU supporting ECC. It worked really well and was online for over View community ranking In the Top 10% of largest communities on Reddit. Both the Pro models from those brands are 7,200RPM and would be slightly noisier + more heat which could increase fan speeds if things get too warm - depending on room temp and your use case variables. The problem is the gap between normal ITX-boards with ~4 SATA ports and actual server boards with insane amounts of ports and $$$. 1x8 TB drive will cost approx the same with no redundancy but twice as much storage if you need the space. You don’t need 2 8 core cpus with 100 gigs of ram and 12-36 drives for a home NAS.
